Gary's Story

Gary held a steady job in a factory for many years, until a heart attack left him unable to work and struggling to make ends meet. Once he found out about the Dare to Care program at the Multi-Purpose Community Action center in Taylorsville, he was confident he and his wife would get by. “I come down here every Friday for produce, and I also get a family box once a month. It’s really a God-send to have Dare to Care,” Gary says. He and his wife look forward to everything they receive on distribution days, and are impressed by the efficient process. “The food is good. It’s fresh and always delivered on time. When I get here they are always ready for us. They’re organized and on top of it,” Gary says confidently. Since Dare to Care has profoundly changed Gary’s family, he continually promotes Dare to Care services to other seniors who are in need, but may not be aware help is available. “They have a lot down here. It supplements us tremendously and really helps make ends meet. I am so thankful.” Gary firmly believes, “if it weren’t for Dare to Care, a lot of people would go hungry.”  

Shelby County

Lisa's Story

For the past three years, life has been a fight for 54-year-old Lisa. A stroke left her limited use of her legs and completely diminished her ability to return to the job she had held for many years. Since then, she has relied on Dare to Care and the food pantry at the Serenity Center in Shelbyville. Lisa is grateful for this distribution site, that often serves more than 600 people each week. “Even if the line is long, I just wait my turn. I am so thankful for Dare to Care. Everyone is wonderful here. The people are friendly and everyone is so helpful,” Lisa says boldly. Two of Lisa’s neighbors, ages 89 and 75, are shut-ins, unable to go out and get food, so every time Dare to Care provides her with a box of food, she shares with her neighbors and the blessing is multiplied. For the much needed gift of food, that Lisa couldn’t otherwise afford, she can’t thank Dare to Care enough. “It helps me a lot and I am so grateful.”  

Oldham County

David's Story

David decided it was time to fight for a different way of life for his four kids, but this time he was doing it alone. Shortly after rescuing his 4, 6, 9 and 10-year-old kids from a neglectful situation David was determined to change things. With their mom now incarcerated, David was forced to go it alone. He turned to Dare to Care and Mission Crestwood out of necessity and survival. “When you are at the bottom, they give you peace of mind that they are here for you.” David began helping out around Mission Crestwood wherever they needed him, and now he involves the kids. David serves in order to give something back to an organization he believes gives him so much. “Mission Crestwood allowed me to trust that there wouldn’t be a day without food for those kids,” David says. “They always make us feel comfortable, at ease and welcome.” And, for Mission Crestwood Director, Rusti Morrison, that’s the goal. “We are about strengthening families and our community by building a safety net, loving on people and sharing what’s here,” Rusti says proudly.  

Jefferson County

Andrew's Story

Andrew turned to Dare to Care's partner agency, St. Vincent De Paul, after he had a heart attack and then lost his job. Since then, his health has improved and he has found work, but sometimes he still struggles to provide food for his family. Andrew is grateful for the food they receive and the donors who make it possible. "Without this food pantry, I don't know where I'd be. It has been a big time blessing for me."

Henry County

Joe's Story

Any mention of the Dare to Care Food Pantry at the Henry County Help Center, brings 80-year-old Joe to tears, every time. The gratitude he has for longtime co-worker and friend, Director Joe Durbin and his staff of volunteers, is overwhelming. “This is a tremendous program. It really helps us financially when we struggle to make ends meet,” Joe says tearfully. Joe worked faithfully for Fischer’s Meat Packing Company for 43 years. Now, the high cost of his wife’s medicines and the challenges of being on a fixed income push Joe and his wife to make ends meet. “At times we may only have $30-40 each month for groceries. But with this help here, we can make it,” Joe says proudly. Joe met Food Pantry Director, Joe Durbin, many years ago when they worked together at Fischer’s. And today, Joe Durbin volunteers seven days a week to keep people in his community, like his buddy Joe, from going hungry. Joe believes Dare to Care can help many seniors like him find hope and find food.  

Carroll County

Sandy's Story

Sandy and her husband live on $1000 a month, $400 of which goes toward her husband’s medication. Since his heart attack, it has been a struggle to regain his strength, and now Sandy has stopped her job, as a nurse, to provide full-time care for her husband. This is a job she’s happy to do, but it puts a strain on their income. “Our budget is really tight. I need anything I can get. Without this food, we would have to do without. Without it, we would go hungry,” Sandy says emphatically. In order to survive or just to get by, she and her husband have depended on the food, clothing and occasional help with utilities provided by Dare to Care and the partner agencies located in Carroll County. For the past six months, 64-year-old Sandy has come to the Northern Kentucky Community Action Council to get meat, vegetables, fruit and milk, along with toiletries and even vegetable plants to help supplement their food supply. Although the food helps tremendously, Sandy is equally grateful for the selfless and caring staff that greets her every time the doors are open. She loves seeing the friendly faces of the staff each week and has been touched by their continual acts of service. “They treat you like family and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.”  

Bullitt County

Betty's Story

It was Thursday night and 82-year-old Betty was heading to a sock hop at Little Flock Baptist Church, one of Dare to Care’s partner agencies in Bullitt County. Although she was looking forward to a night of dancing, visiting with her friends at Little Flock Baptist Church came first. In addition to receiving food assistance from Little Flock Baptist Church, Betty participates in the programs Little Flock offers to the community. She enjoys the camaraderie, the kindness of all the volunteers and seeing familiar faces each week. “These are some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life,” Betty says of her Dare to Care family. With 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, the food she receives from Dare to Care is appreciated, especially since Betty is on a fixed income. “The food is so helpful. I live meagerly and I don’t have modern conveniences, like most people, so it helps immensely in many ways,” Betty says.

Corporate Volunteering
