Kids Cafe is a program that works, so we decided to do even more!
For more than two decades, Dare to Care has been providing hot, nutritious meals to children through Kids Cafes held at partner sites such as YMCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs. Children who participate are not only comforted and nourished by the meal, they are connected to local after-school programs where they receive academic, social and emotional support. Staff and volunteers who work with participants report positive changes. These changes range from a stronger sense of responsibility and positive attitude, to improved behavior and increased participation in additional support services.
The previous program model required Kids Cafe hosts to have a certified commercial kitchen to prepare the food Dare to Care provided. To eliminate this barrier and triple the number of meals served, Dare to Care opened a Community Kitchen from which to cater and distribute meals to many more organizations throughout the area.
Thanks to the generous support of Lift a Life Foundation and other partners, the Community Kitchen opened in August 2013. The kitchen prepares and delivers more than 1,200 hot meals each weeknight to after-school programs in our community. This is more than triple the number of meals served before the kitchen opened!
Due to the effectiveness of the Kids Cafe program and opportunities to implement additional innovative solutions to hunger, plans are underway to expand our Community Kitchen. Learn more by clicking here.
During the summer months, many Kids Cafes also provide breakfast and lunch for children. Visit the Summer Meals for Kids page for details and a list of participating sites.
