Dare to Care Food Bank has worked tirelessly to provide hunger relief to those in need throughout Kentuckiana.
With the support of a caring community, we have grown to a network of nearly 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, and nutrition programs. Last year alone, more than 22 million pounds of fresh produce and staple food items were distributed throughout our 13-county service area.
But, sadly, the need continues. With the help of client-focused research and collaborative partners, we have developed a clear vision for better addressing food insecurity in Kentuckiana.

We plan to transform our ability to help our clients. It will be the most significant facility and program evolution in the history of our organization – including the relocation, expansion, and redesign of the Dare to Care Community Kitchen.
Dare to Care is partnering with Metro Louisville to relocate our current Community Kitchen from its 5,000 square foot space in Butchertown to a 24,000 square foot former grocery store in the Parkland neighborhood. The new Dare to Care Community Kitchen in partnership with the Novak Family Foundation will feature innovative, targeted programs designed to overcome the barriers affecting hunger relief in our community.
This immense increase in capacity will allow us to implement new solutions to hunger, including:
- More hot, nutritious, after-school meals, increasing current production by 50% to 1,800 meals for children every weekday.
- More robust summer meals for children—at a savings of more than $100,000 over our current model.
- Congregate meals for seniors to address an identified current need of 2,000 meals daily and helping to address social isolation among this growing population.
- Culinary skills job training in collaboration with Catholic Charities’ Common Table program, allowing it to expand and providing our kitchen with skilled, free labor.
- A mobile retail market offering fresh and fresh frozen foods in food desert neighborhoods.
- Build a platform for future growth and innovation to respond to community needs related to hunger
The new facility in Parkland will begin serving the community in spring 2020 and will function in conjunction with our distribution center on Fern Valley Road.
The Dare to Care Community Kitchen relies on the generosity of the community that helped start Dare to Care nearly 50 years ago.
